After two regular season losses to the Greensburg Pirates, Batesville avenge those Monday with a 3-1 victory to win the sectional championship. The Bulldogs advance to the regional to face No. 12 Providence at 3 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Central.
Greensburg scored in the top of the first inning. Ethan Smith doubled with one out and went to third on Logan Meyer's sacrifice fly. Smith scored on a wild pitch to give the Pirates the early 1-0 lead.
Batesville answered in the home-half of the first inning. Noah Weigel singled and went to second on a ground out. Ronan Post then doubled to score Weigel and knot the game 1-1.
Greensburg threatened in the second inning. Patrick Robbins walked to start the inning. Ethan Bishop followed with a single. With one out, Ayden Sefton singled to load the bases. Batesville turned a double play to get out of the inning and keep the game tied 1-1.
Batesville got a single by William Huber and walk to Tiago Batta in the second inning, but did not push across any runs.
The only baserunner in the third inning was Batesville's Post on a walk. After three innings, the game was knotted at 1-1.
Batesville turned another double play in the fourth inning, and Greensburg retired Batesville in order in the bottom of the inning to keep the game at 1-1.
Greensburg got a 2-out walk to Zayden Miller in the top of the fifth inning, but the Pirates could not move Miller around to score.
Batesville went in front for good in the bottom of the fifth. Preston Blessing was hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Jake Schornick advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third base on another wild pitch. Weigel's sacrifice fly to right field brought in Schornick to give Batesville the 2-1 lead. With two outs, Brayden Maple was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a triple by Post.
After five innings, Batesville led 3-1.
In the sixth inning, the only runner on base was Batesville's Carson Meyer after being hit by a pitch.
In the top of the seventh inning, Greensburg's Robbins singled to get things started. With two outs, pinch runner Hayden Ramsey went to second on a walk to Sefton. Batesville's Meyer got the next Pirate on strikes to end the game.
Batesville's Maple got the win on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Meyer pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.
Luke Hoeing suffered the loss for the Pirates. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six.
