After a 2025 season that didn't quite match the lofty standard he set the year before, Antoine Winfield Jr. enters 2026 with a chance to remind everyone why he's one of the NFL's premier safeties. The Buccaneers' defensive leader has made it clear that his focus this season is simple: get back to playing the style of football that earned him First Team All-Pro honors.

Tampa Bay's defense looks significantly different from a year ago.

The Buccaneers spent the offseason adding veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, drafting first-round edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., and welcoming back a healthy Calijah Kancey. Combined with Yaya Diaby's continued development, the defensive front has the potential to generate far more consistent pressure than it did last season. Some of Winfield's biggest seasons have come when the Buccaneers were consistently affecting opposing quarterbacks. More pressure up front leads to rushed decisions, errant throws, and additional opportunities for safeties to create game-changing plays.

The secondary should also be in a better position to succeed.

With Jacob Parrish, Benjamin Morrison, and Keionte Scott competing for roles alongside veteran Zyon McCollum and versatile defensive back Tykee Smith, the Buccaneers have more depth and competition than they've had in recent years. If that group develops as expected, Winfield will have more freedom to do what he does best, play instinctively and attack the football, the style that made him an All-Pro.

Whether it was forcing fumbles, coming away with interceptions, blitzing off the edge or making plays near the line of scrimmage, Winfield established himself as one of the league's most versatile defensive weapons. Todd Bowles has never been afraid to move him around the formation, and an improved defense could allow him to play even more aggressively. The Buccaneers are counting on several players to elevate their games in 2026, but few are more important than Winfield. When he's making splash plays, Tampa Bay's defense tends to operate at a different level.
