The Milwaukee Bucks will be one of the most interesting teams to watch next season as they step firmly into their rebuild and test out their completely transformed roster for the first time.
Between the new acquisitions brought over via the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, their exciting first round picks in Brayden Burries and Nate Ament, the Bucks have a lot of avenues ahead of them that can build toward future success.
Burries stands out as possibly the most exciting piece of the new Bucks after an outstanding performance during Summer League and as one of the Bucks' two first-round picks, Burries will have a lot of expectations placed upon him, but based on what he's already shown in an albeit small sample size, there is a lot to like about him.
The Bucks' front office and staff are also clearly excited about what Burries has shown himself to be capable of and after getting a chance to act as the leading offensive force of a team, at least one unnamed Bucks executive interviewed by Keith Smith of Spotrac is looking forward to seeing more of what Burries can do.
“This was really fun, because we got to the put the ball his hands a lot. He showed scoring and playmaking that you didn’t always get to see in college,” a Bucks assistant coach said (via Spotrac). “Not sure how much that’ll happen in the season, because we’ve got a lot of other ballhandlers and creators. But seeing that he can do it is really, really exciting.”
As the assistant coach said, Burries might have as many opportunities to be an offensive leader in the regular season as he'll be playing behind players like Ryan Rollins and Tyler Herro, but just knowing that they have Burries as an option coming off the bench is a major asset for the Bucks to work with.
One of the delicate things of rebuilding a team is the transitionary period that the Bucks are going through right now, where they've added a lot of new players through both trades and the draft, but still retain several veteran players from their existing roster last season, and now they have to balance the playing time between those new additions and veterans.
Sticking with a steady lineup that includes Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner and Rollins is good for the Bucks due to the continuity that they can bring to the current roster and will help to ease the transition to the roster for Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr., who are both projected to be starters with a big portion of minutes.
But at the same time, Milwaukee has an influx of young talent in Burries, Ament, Kasparas Jakucionis and Kel'el Ware who will all also be newcomers to Milwaukee and present tremendous upside and finding a way to get all of those players minutes and experience is well will be a big challenge, but the veterans and the young players could find a way to help each other with a little bit of friendly competition within the roster.
“We’ve got a lot of vets who are going to play. But behind them are kids who are going to push them. We should have a really competitive camp this year. From talking to the guys, everyone feels energized and ready to go. We’re excited to get back to work already in the fall,” a Bucks front office executive said.
