Bryson DeChambeau is always a threat to take home a major, but he got off to a brutal start to the PGA Championship on Thursday morning.
The day began with DeChambeau arriving to the course in a big puffy jacket, which may have shown that he wasn't too comfortable with the elements.
DeChambeau's day didn't unfold as he wanted, as he struggled to produce birdies and avoid bogeys in the opening round. It was such a tough day for the multi-time major winner that it could've taken him out of contention entirely.

DeChambeau shot a 76 in his opening round, putting him at +6 on the day.
On the 11th hole, which was DeChambeau's second on the day, the two-time major champion had an issue with the speed of the greens. His birdie putt went all the way down the green to the bottom of the putting surface, forcing him to make a TK on the hole.
DeChambeau's day of lowlights continued on the second hole, when he hit his drive so far right that it landed on the stairs of a building. DeChambeau then had to take relief and hit the ball from the pine straw, but not before he was admittedly confused.
DeChambeau ended up saving par on the hole to temporarily remain at +4. However, that wouldn't remain as six holes of bogey or worse on the day, including a double bogey on the eighth hole. That hole, which is also a par 3, saw DeChambeau hit a drive will right of the hole and struggle to get up-and-down from the rough.
However, DeChambeau did end the day strong with his lone birdie of the day on the par-5 ninth hole. DeChambeau's +6, though, puts him in danger of missing the cut without a good second round.

DeChambeau began the day on the back nine, so he shot a 39 on his first nine holes and didn't make a birdie until his final hole.
Bryson DeChambeau major history
DeChambeau has two major wins in his career, as he won the U.S. Open in both 2020 and 2024. Overall, DeChambeau has six top-five finishes in major tournaments and has finished inside the top five in the PGA Championship in four of his last five starts at the tournament.
Since 2024, DeChambeau has either been a contender or been non-existent in major tournaments. The LIV golfer has six finishes in the top six, including the 2024 U.S. Open victory, and three missed cuts in those nine events.
