In a game as complex as football, there are countless factors that go into every win and every loss. For the Carolina Panthers in 2026, some of their biggest x-factors are the improvement of their pass rush, the impact of linebacker Devin Lloyd at the second level of their defense and the possible rise of Jonathon Brooks at running back.
All that being said, football is still a simple game at heart—and what you get at the quarterback position dwarfs every other element by a mile and a half.
Needless to say, the most important contract decision for the Panthers is what they'll do with starter Bryce Young, per Gary Davenport at Bleacher Report. Davenport writes:
The good news is that the Panthers have two full seasons before they have to make a long-term decision with Young. His fifth-year option getting picked up keeps him under Carolina's control through the 2027 campaign.
However, if Young does not take a rather sizable leap forward this coming season, then leaving that decision until the last year would be taking a big risk.
Executive vice president of fotball operations Brandt Tilis was asked about the potential of a new pact following Monday's outing of training camp. Tilis, as expected, wouldn't reveal much inside baseball on the discussions—but did imply that all parties might be in a wait-and-see mode.
"I would say he ascended last year, and there's still room for him to ascend," Tilis stated. "His ceiling, currently, is unknown—and I think that's exciting for us. And he's working hard to get himself there."
Young passed for career-highs in yards (3,011), touchdowns (23) and completion rate (63.6 percent) in 2025.
