The Boston Bruins started Sunday with a bang when general manager Don Sweeney announced that the team had signed collegiate goaltender Max Lundgren to a one-year entry-level contract for the 2026-27 NHL season.
Lundgren is another local prospect for Boston. The 23-year-old Swedish native patrols the crease for the Merrimack College Warriors in North Andover, Mass.
With Lundgren in the net, the Warriors secured their program’s first-ever Hockey East Title.
The goalie made an absurd 49 saves in the Hockey East Championship against the University of Connecticut Huskies, allowing only one goal and punching Merrimack’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Lundgren was named MVP of the Hockey East Tournament.
He finished the season with a 21-16-2 record, posting a 2.55 goals‑against average and a .920 save percentage. He also led the nation in saves.
At 6-foot-5 and weighing 230 pounds, Lundgren is prototypical size for an NHL goaltender. His entry-level contract carries a cap hit of $952,500 next season as he will attempt to work his way up the Bruins' minor league ranks.
Lundgren told Merrimack College team reporters that he will be reporting to the Providence Bruins in the coming weeks and has already committed to attending a Bruins Development Camp over the summer.
“Obviously, very excited," Lundgren said Sunday in front of teammates and media members. "This is a dream since I was a little kid, to sign an NHL contract. So just really excited, ready to go."
