The Boston Bruins made a trade on Friday night that sent two first-round draft picks to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for top-six winger JJ Peterka.
While two first-round picks are a high price to pay, the Bruins are betting on the upside of the 24-year-old Peterka, who recorded 47 points on 25 goals last season.
After the deal, the Bruins will have four of their top-nine forwards under the age of 25.
They are also waiting on former first-round pick Dean Letourneau, the ever-exciting 19-year-old UND winger Will Zellers, Providence floater Matt Poitras and others in the prospect pool to mature on their way to joining the club in Boston.
Translation: the Bruins are full of young talent.
Peterka has been a starter in the league for four years already. He averages 27 goals a year over the last three seasons. He has no injury history and has had no trouble staying on the ice in his career.
Peterka is better than whatever 18-20-year-old the Bruins would have selected with the 23rd overall pick. You can almost guarantee that.
So while it might not look pretty on paper, the Bruins made a great acquisition in Peterka. If all goes according to plan, his $7.7 million contract could be a steal by the end of it.
