After defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz resigned, the Cleveland Browns considered promoting linebacker coach Jason Tarver to replace him. However, they decided to bring in an outside candidate, Mike Rutenberg, plucking him away from Atlanta and the Browns' former head coach, Kevin Stefanski.

The Browns are keeping Tarver in Cleveland on Rutenberg's staff, promoting him to defensive run game coordinator. This is a smart move by the Browns. Tarver has been a great assistant coach for the team, getting the best out of every linebacker that he has coached since joining Cleveland in 2020.

With Rutenberg, a first-time defensive coordinator, and Todd Monken wanting to keep a similar scheme to the one Jim Schwartz ran, it makes sense to keep Tarver and give him a much-deserved promotion. Rutenberg will likely look to bring in some new assistants he has worked with to replace Tarver as the linebackers coach and add another new voice to the defense.
