Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders went through a four-person quarterback battle last year as the number four guy, so he knows what all goes into it.
As the fourth guy in the modern NFL, there are no reps to be found. It's a really hard spot to be in because all throughout camp, the mindset needs to be getting the top 22 players ready for week one against Jacksonville. The reps are limited for the second string, they are negligible for the third string, and they do not exist for the fourth string.
To combat that, if it means enough to the fourth-string guy, they have to put extra time in. Extra time can look several different ways. They could hold a couple of the bottom-tier wide receivers back to run routes, or they could just take mental reps.
This year's version of Shedeur Sanders is a sixth-round pick, Taylen Green. Green is one of the most elite athletes to get drafted in this year's NFL Draft. He has the measurables of Calvin Johnson with the ability to throw the football.
That's pretty good.
However, he is still very raw, and his game needs a lot of work to it. What doesn't need any work is his raw natural athleticism, which is more than enough for him to use up a roster spot, especially if Sanders is named QB1. Making the roster isn't a concern for Green, but getting reps is.
After practice on day one on Wednesday, there was a clip circulating of Sanders staying out on the practice field with Green, going through the practice script with him and giving him some pointers. Take all of the discourse around Sanders out of the equation; this was really cool to see.
If it was a genuine move, which I believe that it is, this is just a young kid being an incredible teammate to a player that's probably drowning in his first NFL practice.
It is moves like this that make me so excited for Sanders to win the job. The conversation around Sanders is so elevated and ridiculous at times, but the discourse of him being selfish and arrogant, I just don't see. What I do see is the most popular young quarterback in all of football, a good teammate, a good person still trying to develop his quarterback ability.
If he does prove this year that he can be the future quarterback in Cleveland, he will have superstardom that the city of Cleveland hasn't seen since one LeBron James. If he doesn't, well, the Browns will simply be back to the drawing board.
Good on Sanders for coaching up a young player in the exact same position he was in last season.
