As Cleveland Browns fans continue to mourn the recent trade that sent star defensive end Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday afternoon, general manager Andrew Berry provided insight into the shocking deal.
During his press conference on Tuesday morning, Berry discussed everything that went down before the franchise-altering trade, stating that the opportunity was “unexpected.”
“There are moments, particularly in my job, where opportunities come up that are quite honestly unexpected, and they force you to stop and re-evaluate it and look at it and say, 'Is this something that could be really beneficial to the team?'” Berry stated.
After breaking the single-season sack record during the 2025 NFL season, the rumors surrounding Garrett being traded began to resurface this offseason. The Browns’ 2017 first-round pick requested a trade last offseason, but would instead sign a four-year, $160 millon extension with the organization in March of 2025. And while Berry was adamant about keeping Garrett in Cleveland for the rest of his career throughout the course of the offseason, it’s clear that the front office found a deal that made sense for both the franchise and Garrett.
Berry also laid out the criteria required for the team to trade Garrett, claiming that the deal would need to provide both short- and long-term benefits, a young, cost-controlled player at a premium position, and premium draft capital. Jared Verse, who was part of the deal, is one of the brightest EDGE rushers in the league heading into the 2026 season, and the Browns received a total of three picks in the deal, which means fans will soon find out if the trade benefits the team in the near future.
In addition to his remarks on the massive deal, Berry also told reporters that the team did not blindside Garrett with the trade, stating that the organization made him aware of the situation “about a week ago.”
"We did not blindside Myles with the news yesterday...So he was made aware about a week ago that it was a possibility, and that's a courtesy that obviously we owe him," Berry claimed.
Now, with Garrett out of the picture, the organization possesses a total of 11 picks in the 2027 NFL Draft, with seven of the picks being within the first four rounds. Berry has proven to be an excellent evaluator of talent when it comes to the draft, and with Verse set to fill Garrett’s shoes, the Browns could quickly reshape their future outlook over the next couple of offseasons.
