The Cleveland Browns traded away Myles Garrett for Jared Verse and draft picks, and it will take years to know how good of a move that was.
The Browns' contract decisions since, though, feel like they're coming from an opposite line of thinking, though, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
Cleveland has given contract extensions to defensive backs Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit this week:

There's definitely at least one vantage point from which this doesn't make sense.
The Garrett trade wasn't about just one thing, but in general, Cleveland decided to move off of an expensive player in favor of building for the future.
Garrett just set the NFL's single-season sacks record, so it's not like he was going to be useless anytime soon. The Browns felt it was better to build up the years ahead, though, as opposed to the near-term outcomes.
So why, then, would they keep around players like Ward and Delpit who also surely would have trade value?
They may very well have deserved the contract extensions. That's for analytics, and for future production, to answer.
But if Cleveland is going to downgrade its nearer-term defense by getting rid of Garrett, in favor of building up the roster to peak near the end of this decade, why wouldn't they do the same here, or at least consider it?
To be fair, trades can still follow the contract extensions, and it's not like they've been in major rumors or anything.
It's just a bit confusing. Do the Browns want to win now? Or do they want to win when their new stadium opens? Those questions don't have the same process to reach their answers.
