Growing up in an athletic household with her older sister, Sadie, Marana sophomore Mazie Brown has always been pushed when it comes to sports. With a younger sister, Abbey, who coach Shaun Lara is already excited about, also there nipping at the heels of Mazie and Sadie, the Brown sisters have molded themselves into quite the trio.
That family dynamic played out on the field on Sept. 23 in a ranked flag football road matchup with Mesa Mountain View as both Sadie and Mazie were clutch in a 17-7 win to move to 2-0. The Tigers were ranked No. 8 by The Arizona Republic heading into the game with the Toros at No. 4.
The game was broadcast locally by CBS’ Arizona Family Sports and the Arizona Cardinals.
Mazie got the scoring started with a seven-yard touchdown early in the first quarter, the only score of the game for a majority of the night, while Sadie came up with a key interception in the fourth quarter to stop a driving Toro offense.
“They’re super respectful, very sweet,” Lara said. “But they ball out every day. Best thing yet, Sadie this is her senior year and she’s come out with fire. Mazie, as a sophomore, amazing. Even better yet, we have Abbey coming up next year and she might be one of the best. We’re going to come to find out.
“But I’m super excited for what Sadie is doing, and Mazie. It’s a Brown party out here, for sure.”
The final scoring drive of the game was essentially all Sadie and Mazie. With the game still in the balance at 10-7, the pair hauled in eight straight receptions on the same play – a simple out route to the flat on the right side of the field – to get the ball down to the 1-yard line.
“It’s so nice, I love playing with my sister,” Mazie said. “Every time she does something good, I’m like, ‘That’s my sister!’ Honestly, I look up to her. Everything that she does, I want to do it, but better. It’s like a friendly competition. We can go home, practice together. I get all of her tips and she gets all of mine. It really works well.”
The drive was capped off with a 1-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Malaysia Roebuck, who came down with a bobbling ball to seal the game.
It’s the type of the circus catch that Roebuck, regarded as one of the best overall players in Arizona, makes look routine.

“Whenever you throw the ball up to her, she’s coming down with it,” Lara said.
The win against Mesa Mountain View was reminiscent of last season for Marana, also coming against another Mesa school — Red Mountain.
Another early season game, Marana came up to the Valley and defeated Red Mountain 28-14 to announce itself to the rest of the conference. The Tigers ended up making a run to the semifinals in the playoffs. That game too was on TV.
“That’s two years in a row we’ve had a Cardinals Game of the Week up here and that’s two wins,” Lara said. “I’m excited for them to maybe come on down to Tucson and a run a game of the week. We’re excited. We love it, and we love that pressure.”
For Mesa Mountain View (1-1) and first-year coach Rene Elizondo, it’s a tough game to evaluate. The offense struggled to move the ball in the first half, but then came out in the second half and put together a 15-play scoring drive that took off almost seven minutes off the clock to make it 10-7.
The defense played well, limiting the Tigers to only a few big plays. There was a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter as well.
In all, it’s game that Elizondo can take and learn from as Marana will be one of the best teams the Toros will face all season.
“I think the early energy Marana gave us right away clearly rattled our girls,” Elizondo said. “We got punched in the mouth first and we didn’t get up right away. We kind of took our sweet time getting up and that sweet time cost us 10 points in the first half. Adversity is great, though. I think it’s the best possible lesson in life. We get to see how we respond.”
