The Denver Broncos have taken another step toward building a new stadium at Burnham Yard.

The Broncos have finalized "a formal purchase agreement" with the state of Colorado to buy the site, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. The club will pay the state $45.81 million, which is what Colorado still owed on its loan that was used to purchase Burnham Yard for $50 million in 2021.

"We are pleased to finalize a formal agreement with CDOT to purchase the Burnham Yard site with a closing expected this fall," Broncos spokesperson Patrick Smyth said in a statement. "As this remains the preferred site, we remain optimistic that our collaboration with the city, state and community will keep everything on track for 2031."

Burnham Yard has not yet shed the "preferred site" title because the Broncos still need to secure other properties around the site (Denver Water is among the holdouts that have not yet agreed to sell). Klis reported that the team hopes to begin construction on a new stadium in 2027.
