Broncos Wire's 91-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie offensive lineman Gavin Ortega, No. 68.
Before the Broncos: Ortega (6-5, 300 pounds) spent his collegiate career at the FCS level, playing for the Big Sky Conference's Weber State. In four years with the Wildcats, Ortega played in 41 games, becoming a staple on the offensive line. In 2024, Ortega earned second-team All-Big Sky honors, as well as earning off-field accolades as Academic All-Big Sky and All-District honors in Exercise and Sport.
Ortega's senior year in 2025 put an exclamation point on his time with Weber State. Ortega, voted a team captain, was part of an offensive line that only gave up 14 sacks the entire year, earning first-team All-Big Sky honors and second-team FCS All-American honors. Off the field, Ortega was honored with Academic All-Big Sky honors in nursing.
Broncos tenure: Ortega was one of 13 undrafted free agents the Denver Broncos signed shortly after the 2026 NFL draft. He is set to make his orange and blue debut during the preseason this summer.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Practice squad candidate. Ortega's presence represents the youth movement on the offensive line as the contracts of older players expire in the coming years. Broncos general manager George Paton has expressed his desire to make this team "younger, hungrier, cheaper," and Ortega could be part of the solution down the road. For now, Ortega is likely competing for a spot on the practice squad.
