Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie cornerback Brent Austin, No. 25. Note: During the offseason, offensive and defensive players can share a number, and Austin is currently sharing No. 25 with running back Cody Shrader. If they both end up making the team, one of Austin or Schrader will have to change their jersey number before the regular season.
Before the Broncos: Austin (5-11, 180 pounds) was a well-traveled collegiate star who played four seasons in the NCAA; two seasons for the Sun Belt's James Madison, one season for the American conference's South Florida and one season for the Cal Golden Bears. Across his various destinations, Austin made 110 total tackles (73 solo, 37 assisted), three interceptions (two of them returned for touchdowns) and 24 pass deflections.
Broncos tenure: Although Austin didn't hear his name called in the three days of April's NFL draft, Austin ranked among the best undrafted players available, and had multiple teams putting in bids for his signature. Ultimately, the Denver Broncos came out on top, signing Austin as an undrafted free agent.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Long shot. Austin has an uphill battle in one of the best cornerback rooms in the NFL. Trying to get on the field as a corner may not be feasible, but he could impress on special teams while competing for a roster spot this summer. Austin will face long odds to make the active roster, but he'll have a shot.
