When the Denver Broncos kick off their preseason schedule with a road game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday evening, one of the key position battles to watch will be the competition for the backup quarterback job.
Jarrett Stidham has held Denver's backup quarterback role since 2023, but Sam Ehlinger's performance has been generating some buzz this summer (which followed Stidham trade rumors in the spring). After receiving play calls from new offensive coordinator Davis Webb at training camp, Stidham and Ehlinger are set to make their live-game debuts with the new OC on Friday.
“They’ve been great," Webb said of the backup QBs after last Saturday's practice. "‘Stiddy,' he’s in Year 4 [in Denver]. He’s spotted play for us very well. I think Sam has grown tremendously from last year to this year. We’re really fortunate to have three really good quarterbacks. Not every organization can say that. We can, and we trust all three if they had to play. I’m really looking forward to those guys in the preseason.”
Friday's game will be locally televised on 9News at 5 p.m. MT. Out-of-market fans can stream the Broncos-Falcons showdown with ESPN's Unlimited plan. The Broncos carried three QBs on the active roster in 2025, but it remains to be seen if they will do the same in 2026. Either way, only one of Stidham or Ehlinger will win the QB2 job this summer. May the best arm win.
