Sean Payton might be close to adding a veteran assistant coach to his staff.
The Denver Broncos met with Mike Zimmer last week about a "senior coaching position," according to a report from KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. No deal has been struck yet, but there appears to be mutual interest.
Zimmer, 69, has been coaching or advising since 1979. He coached in the NFL from 1994-2022 before a two-year stint at the college level. He went 72-56-1 as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-2021, overlapping with current Broncos general manager George Paton from 2014-2020. Zimmer also overlapped with Payton at the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2005.
Payton lost senior assistant Pete Carmichael to the Buffalo Bills this offseason, but Carmichael was an offensive coach. If he joins, Zimmer would presumably focus on the defense, perhaps in a senior defensive advisor role.
Zimmer was also linked to the Broncos when they were seeking a defensive coordinator in 2023. Denver ended up hiring Vance Joseph as DC, and Zimmer served as an analyst/consultant for the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023 before a stint as defensive coordinator with the Cowboys in 2024.
