The Denver Broncos pulled a shocker on draft night by taking Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Most experts believed the Broncos would add a running back, wide receiver, tight end, or defensive lineman. Broncos' head coach Sean Payton announced the basis behind the pick.
Mike Klis of 9 News wrote a piece on the Payton post-draft press conference, which featured transcribed quotes from the Broncos brass following the selection of Barron 20th overall. Payton provided clarity surrounding their pick of Barron, with reasoning for choosing him over other positions.
"When you get into these spots that are pass rusher, corners, even offensive lineman, quarterback ... You look at this year's draft, we felt like it was a thin year at some of the defensive back positions."
Payton and the Broncos grabbed the second defensive back off the board, and took him when most expected Denver to go elsewhere. Payton's reasoning means the Broncos viewed the defensive backs available in round two and later not as highly as the defensive linemen and running backs available down the board.

One of the main reasons Payton brought up for the Barron selection was his versatility. "I think one of the things that was really apparent when we studied him, and one of the things that was attractive about the players, is his versatility."
Payton continued praising Barrons' versatility, "You see snaps, you're following all around the film, junior year, senior year, he's outside, he's inside. I think he's got great versatility."
Barron was one of the highest graded defensive backs in the 2025 draft class, and adding him to Denver's defense makes a strength even stronger. A starting cornerback room of reigning Defensive Player of the Year winner Patrick Surtain II, Riley Moss, and now Barron is among the best in the NFL.
General manager George Paton emphasized a reason for the Broncos adding Barron despite having great cornerbacks on the roster. "I've said it before: You can't have enough good corners. We had a few injuries this year, and we saw what kind of happens. We can't have enough good cover guys. ... He was just too unique to pass up."
The Broncos' addition of Barron came as a surprise, but with the layout of the rest of the draft class, it's a move that makes a ton of sense for Denver. An already great defense just got significantly tougher to move the ball on, thanks to Barron rounding out arguably the best cornerback room in the NFL.
