Keith Hernandez is apologizing to anyone who took umbrage with his description of former Mets players as “garbage.”
The retired MLB star and SportsNet New York (SNY) broadcaster shared his opinion on the state of the franchise on Tuesday, Aug. 4, one day after the trade deadline that saw the team unload one-third of its active roster players.
“Well, they definitely brought in the truck and took out all the garbage,” Hernandez, 72, said to his partner in the Mets booth, Gary Cohen, during the Mets-Cleveland Guardians game.
He continued, “But this is a turnaround for this club.”
After the commercial break, Hernandez thought better of his phrasing.

“I said, ‘got out the garbage,’ ” the former first baseman said. “That’s a poor choice of words, folks. I don’t want these guys beating me up. They got rid of some very, very good players.”

He added, “I can’t believe that word came out of my mouth, so my apologies.”
Hernandez’s comments came hours after the 49-66 Mets dealt numerous players away in return for minor-league prospects.
Among the Mets leaving the clubhouse on Monday were Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor, who were traded to the Chicago Cubs, as well as relievers Luke Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooks Raley to the Philadelphia Phillies and Huascar Brazobán to the Chicago White Sox, according to MLB.com.
The trades were on the heels of pitcher Freddy Peralta leaving for the Tampa Bay Rays, A.J. Minter going to the Minnesota Twins and David Peterson heading to the Cubs.
In February, the former Seinfeld guest star re-upped his contract with SNY, virtually guaranteeing that he will be in the booth for the next three seasons.
