The Dallas Cowboys have missed the postseason for two straight years, leaving no room for excuses at training camp in Oxnard. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer made that message clear just 20 minutes into Saturday's practice.
He halted drills, pulled the entire roster to the middle of the field, and blasted the team with an expletive-filled reality check. The whole scene turned heads because the players' families were right there watching from the sidelines.
By Sunday, Schottenheimer defended his outburst as a necessary, instinctual move to spark his group that started the session with mismatched energy
"I do a lot of things on instincts. I just felt like the energy was a bit off," Schottenheimer said. "I think they got the message and ended up putting together a hell of a practice."
And the best part? Dallas players alsp backed him up. According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Cowboys players said they had no issue with the usually mild-mannered Schottenheimer getting on them.
"[He was] just reminding us that we have to have a productive day," edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku said, per ESPN. "It was nothing that really happened. It just felt as though he needed to do that as the head coach, and that's what he did. I think we had a pretty good day."
Wide receiver George Pickens kept it even shorter, adding that the coach was "just pushing guys to be better."
The Cowboys were coming off three straight padded practices before switching to shells on Saturday. Schottenheimer clearly wasn't letting the lighter gear serve as an excuse for lighter effort, calling players in from both practice fields to make sure the message reached everyone.
After the Cowboys suffered a frustrating 7-9-1 season and missed the playoffs, the pressure is high in Dallas. Schottenheimer is in no mood to coddle his team at training camp. And he is not ready to let the standard drop, no matter who is watching from the sidelines.
