After trading away franchise slugger Rafael Devers and then riding a surprise surge in the standings into the playoffs, the Boston Red Sox added several win-now players to the roster in search of an even deeper run this season.
The team signed Ranger Suarez and traded for Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray among other moves geared toward improving their chances in the competitive American League East division. But so far in the early season, things haven’t worked out as the team had hoped.
“The Red Sox are 2-8, matching their worst record through the first 10 games of a season in franchise history,” the Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr wrote after a loss on Monday. “They have the fewest wins, and became the first team in the majors to reach eight losses this year... They rank second in errors, have the third-worst run differential, are winless in three one-run games.”
And while there seems to be plenty of blame to go around in Boston, some fans have focused their ire on one offseason trade addition who hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Sends Caleb Durbin Message As Boston Red Sox Struggle
The Red Sox lost star third baseman Alex Bregman to a new contract from the Chicago Cubs and have attempted to fill his position with 26-year-old utility infielder Caleb Durbin. The team acquired Durbin in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers after he enjoyed a strong rookie debut last year, but so far he is slashing just .125/.176/.156 as the new third baseman in Boston.
As concerns about the Red Sox’s new player continue to grow among fans, Brewers manager Pat Murphy sent a message for those who might doubt his ability to turn things around.
“You can get down on him if you want. The fans can boo him. You can do whatever you want to do. But Caleb Durbin is a winner in every sense of the word,” Murphy said, according to The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey. “I don’t worry about that kid. Don’t lose sleep over his lack of numbers so far.”

Boston Red Sox Infielder Caleb Durbin Responds To Hostile Home Fans
Durbin endured some boos from Red Sox fans during the team’s home opener last week, though he also heard some cheers after he broke his hitless streak in the fourth inning.
“That’s Boston, right?” Durbin said of the crowd’s reaction after that game, per The Athletic’s Steve Buckley. “It’s honestly a good thing, because you want the fans to be on you. That’s what makes Boston special.”
As far as Murphy is concerned, at least, Durbin will soon win more Red Sox fans over. And in the meantime, it seems like he is handling the rough start to the season as well as he can.
