Even though Jacob Misiorowski has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, and the Milwaukee Brewers have gotten solid production from others in the rotation in 2026, they now have a big need at the position.

The MLB trade deadline should give the Brewers a chance to resolve their rotation issue, which has come to fruition thanks to the Brandon Woodruff injury, and the other options also hurt, like Quinn Priester and even Kyle Harrison (though his isn't season-ending).

With a need in the rotation, the Brewers could look to upgrade with someone like Tarik Skubal. But, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report instead named San Francisco Giants 3.33 ERA lefty Robbie Ray as their "perfect" trade target this summer.

Brewers 'perfect' trade target is Giants' Robbie Ray​

"Milwaukee Brewers (99.8% postseason odds): LHP Robbie Ray," Miller writes. "The moral of the story is that while the Brewers presently have the best record in baseball, they need some starting pitching about as badly as anyone."

Misiorowski is likely on an innings limit this season as he and the Brewers are careful about his workload. Harrison is on the injured list, and now Woodruff is done for the season alongside Priester.

For as good as the rotation has been at times this season, they now have a clear need for at least one more starting pitcher.

That's why Ray would make a lot of sense. Really, and a starting pitcher would work. But, instead of spending a fortune to acquire Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, the Brewers would be better off adding Ray as a much cheaper trade target.

The 34-year-old is in the final year of a five-year, $115 million contract. But, while the financial commitment might be a bit high, his on-field production is more than good enough to justify parting with some prospects.

He has a 3.33 ERA this season in 19 starts (20 outings) with an 8-6 record and 1.5 bWAR. While he doesn't have the best numbers of his career, his 120 ERA+ is better than the last four seasons of his career.

Ray is a valuable trade target and would be a big upgrade for the Brewers' rotation while not costing the team a fortune in prospect/player capital to bring him over in a trade.

The Brewers' "perfect" trade target, according to Miller, is Robbie Ray. He'd make perfect sense for Milwaukee, as an affordable and readily available trade target who'd be an upgrade over their current rotation options.
