Now that the second half of the 2026 MLB season is underway, the Milwaukee Brewers officially have a new face in their clubhouse.
On Wednesday, Milwaukee traded for Houston Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., left-hander Colton Gordon, and cash in exchange for outfielder Jadyn Fielder.
Ahead of the Brewers’ series opener against the Miami Marlins on Friday, McCullers was activated from the Injured List after dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder.
McCullers also got a chance to speak with the media, and he was able to take time to praise the pitching staff.
"That's another big reason," McCullers told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com and others about why he is excited to be in Milwaukee. "Didn't get to touch on it when, you know, [talking] about the trade.
"But you look at the guys who come through here, the arms that have come through here, how successful they've been, you know, the way the whole pitching, you know, staff throws from, you know, top to bottom," McCullers continued.
"I know Logan Henderson as well, just from, you know, being — he works out at the same place I work out in Houston," he added. "And, you know, we've just talked casually in the offseason. He's always talked about how much, you know, he's enjoyed being here and the group and the staff as well. So, I look forward to working with them."
Until now, McCullers has only played for the Astros since they selected him in the 2012 MLB Draft. As a result, the Tampa, Fla. native is taking time to get used to his new situation.
"Like I said, I played a quick game of catch yesterday," McCullers said. "I think they're trying to let me, you know, settle in a little bit, but I'm excited to hear what they have to say. Obviously, I'm at a much different point in my career now than I was, you know, when I was a little bit younger."
McCullers, 32, has had quite the uphill battle in recent seasons. After having surgery in June 2023 to repair his right flexor tendon and remove a bone spur, McCullers missed the remainder of the season and all of the 2024 campaign due to a setback in his recovery.
Because of his shoulder, McCullers has not pitched in an MLB setting since May 13. Given what he has gone through, McCullers is ready to adjust and do his best in whatever role the organization assigns him.
"I've been, you know, through quite a bit of surgeries, a little bit of adversity as of late," McCullers said. "So, I'm an open book. I'm ready to, you know, make adjustments, you know, use my stuff differently, kind of whatever they feel like can give me, you know, the best opportunity to fill the ball up."
