The Los Angeles Chargers have officially signed fourth-round wide receiver Brenen Thompson to his rookie deal, putting the finishing touches on their entire 2026 draft class before the start of training camp.
The Mississippi State standout signed a four-year deal worth approximately $5.6 million, which carries an average annual salary of $1.4 million. Despite not having any guaranteed money included in the deal, the signing ensures that Thompson will enter camp with no contract-related distractions as he begins his NFL journey.
Selected by the Bolts with the 105th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Thompson arrives in Los Angeles after a breakout season at Mississippi State.
The 22-year-old Spearman, Texas native began his college career with the Texas Longhorns, appearing in one game and recording a single reception for 32 yards. He transferred to Oklahoma as a sophomore, where he caught seven passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, before following that up with 19 receptions for 230 yards and two scores the next season for the Sooners.
Thompson transferred to Mississippi State for his final season in 2025, where he earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after posting career highs with 57 receptions for 1,054 yards and six touchdowns. He added 232 yards after the catch, showcasing his ability to create with the ball in his hands, while averaging 17.9 yards per target. He was charged with five drops on the year and also contributed four carries for 14 yards and a rushing touchdown.
At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Thompson measured in at five-foot-nine, 164 pounds, with 29 3/8-inch arms and 9-inch hands. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash at this year’s combine, posting a 4.26-second time along with a 1.54-second 10-yard split.
Thompson's elite speed was one of the biggest reasons Los Angeles targeted him in the draft. Throughout offseason workouts and minicamp, the rookie displayed that same explosiveness, generating positive reviews from coaches and teammates. He reportedly hauled in a touchdown reception of more than 50 yards during practice and made several other eye-catching plays that highlighted his ability to stretch defenses vertically.
Thompson enters a crowded receiver room, but his unique skill set gives him a chance to carve out an immediate role. Whether as a deep threat, gadget player or special teams contributor, the rookie will have opportunities to make an impact.
Now officially under contract, Thompson can focus solely on earning meaningful reps and proving that the Chargers found another hidden gem in the fourth round of the draft.
