At 3:45 p.m. PST Saturday, the Seattle Seahawks announced an agreement between The Estate of Paul G. Allen and a group led by former San Francisco 49ers owner Vinod Khosla on an NFL-record $9.6 billion sale.

The team might’ve had to hurry, as Adam Schefter and Seth Wickersham broke the news of the sale and the price at 3:38 p.m., just seven minutes before the team’s tweet.

The most shocking factor here is the price. Many sources have predicted the Super Bowl Champions would blow the league’s previous record purchase out of the water. Josh Harris’ winning Washington Commanders bid was only $6.05 billion in 2023, which Khosla paid 59% more than just three years later. Front Office Sports (FOS) published predictions from a source named Herrick Feinstein that ended up being spot-on, giving $9.5 billion as an estimate.

FOS also seems to have been correct in reporting the sale came down to two major bidders in the end. Khosla faced competition from a group by two major Boston Celtics ownership figures, Aditya Mittal and Wyc Grousbeck, but seems to have won the auction. More details should be expected in the coming days, but it seems as though The Khosla Era is on in Seattle as The Allen Era went out with a storybook ending.
