In the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Syracuse running back LeQuint Allen.
Let's break down the pick, and if you missed our other recaps, you can find them below.
On the ground or through the air, Allen has been a big part of the Syracuse offense for the last two seasons. In both 2023 and 2024, Allen surpassed 1,000 rushing yards at 4.5 yards per attempt and totaled a combined 25 touchdowns, per PFF.
Of course, for any running back, there is going to be a certain prerequisite that they must meet as a ball carrier, but within Liam Coen's offense, Allen's ability as a pass-catcher is very much noteworthy. Last season in Tampa Bay, the Bucs' running backs were major factors in the passing game under Coen.
Allen finished the 2024 season with 78 targets, and he caught 64 of those passes for 529 yards and four touchdowns. Also of note, Allen has experience lining up in the slot, and it's not as if all of these completions he had were on dump-offs when no one was open; there were also drawn-up pass-catching opportunities for him.
Lance Zierlein: "Allen is a versatile back with adequate size and speed. He’s decisive and gets what he can on most carries but lacks burst, imagination and contact force to create on his own. He’s a reliable pass-catching option with natural hands and an ability to run routes and find yards after the catch. His pass-protection willingness and execution stands out against others in this class. Allen’s ability to cover kicks and return punts adds to his value as a potential Day 3 pick who could compete for a role as a third-down option."
Liam Coen: "Then you look at [LeQuint] Allen, kind of an interesting player. Can play a little bit of slot. Move him into the back field. Obviously, he had 1,000 yards over the last two years, and then he can catch the ball out of the back field. Good in the screen game. Competitor, man," Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said. This guy loves to play, loves to compete. Made some critical plays in some critical moments for Syracuse this past year on a team that was really good again."
