Brayan Bello Details Reason For Success Against Phillies originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have been trying to find a way to get Brayan Bello back on track, and he pitched well on Tuesday in the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bello has struggled this season, so Boston opted to use Jovani Moran as the opener. Bello was going to pitch the bulk of the innings out of the bullpen, which is what he did on Tuesday.
Against the Phillies, Bello pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out five and walking one. It was a much better performance from Bello, and after the game, he revealed the key difference he made.
“I think I was very focused and had conviction on how to throw every single pitch, and I was also able to attack the zone so I think that was the key today,” Bello said postgame.
Bello was 1-4 with a 9.12 ERA with 15 walks and 17 strikeouts in 25.2 innings as a starter this season, while since coming out of the bullpen, he has a 1.29 ERA over 13.1 innings, walking two and striking out 12.
The right-hander also believes the work he’s doing in between outings has also helped him have success.
“I feel more comfortable right now,” said Bello. “LIke I said after my last outing in Detroit, that is when my season started and that’s what my mentality is and that’s what I’m working toward.”
Despite Bello’s solid performance out of the bullpen, Boston suffered a 2-1 loss to the Phillies on Tuesday.
