The Boston Red Soxpitching staff has been pitching out of their minds, and has been the sole reason they aren’t already out of contention. However, they do have one outlier of a player, someone who most fans thought was starting to fix himself: Brayan Bello.

Bello just had another abysmal outing today, on his birthday no less. He went five innings, got one strikeout while giving up eight hits, seven earned runs, three walks, and two home runs.

Bello had it figured out

It seemed like Boston had finally found a way to fix Bello. They would put an opener in front of him, a reliever that would go an inning and then Bello would step in. During those two games, Bello posted a 1.35 ERA, a BAA of .170, an 8.1 K/9, and a FIP of 1.77.

However, it seems like Boston thought he was ready to start a game again, and as previously noted, he definitely wasn’t.

In Bello’s first six starts, he had a 1-4 record, a 9.12 ERA, 17 Ks, and a WHIP of 2.260 over 25 innings pitched. He was the worst pitcher in baseball, until those two opener games.

Now, his ERA is up to 7.16 after he dropped it to 6.46 in the past two games. With that in mind, his spot on Boston’s roster is now definitely questionable.

Bello’s future in the rotation is grim

With Garrett Crochet coming back sooner or later, Bello’s spot in the rotation is all but gone. Ranger Suarez has become the de facto ace in Crochet’s absence, Connelly Early and Payton Tolle are pitching out of their minds, and Sonny Gray isn’t half bad either.

So, this leaves Bello with two options: be sent down to AAA to become a backup in case of injury, or ask for a trade to anywhere else that would start him.

Bello has shown promise, as last year he was a reliable starter. Teams that need a middle of the rotation starter should be knocking on the door to take a chance with him.
