Braves trade proposal ships three top-5 prospects to Twins for 3.42 ERA All-Star ace originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves haven't played their first regular-season game yet, but they've been dealing with some major issues with the pitching staff.
While Chris Sale and Spencer Strider look fine, Spencer Schwellenbach, AJ Smith-Shawver, and Hurtson Waldrep are banged up. Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder, and Reynaldo Lopez are being relied upon as key parts of the rotation. That's not ideal.
To fix this issue, Bleacher Reports' Zachary D. Rymer proposed a trade idea that would land Minnesota Twins All-Star ace Joe Ryan. But, in return, Rymer's proposal would have the Braves giving up three of their top-5 prospects in a very expensive trade.
Braves trade proposal ditches 3-of-5 top prospects for Joe Ryan
"Trade proposal: Atlanta Braves get RHP Joe Ryan; Minnesota Twins get LHP Cameron Caminiti, RHP JR Ritchie, SS Alex Aodise," Rymer proposed.
For starters, landing Ryan would be a great addition to the Braves' rotation. Even if they get their starters back healthy at some point, having Ryan join Strider and Sale at the top of the rotation would give the Braves a core rotation for a postseason run.
Ryan is 29 years old and under club control through 2027. The Braves would be getting two years of Ryan, who is coming off a career year with a 3.42 ERA across 30 starts with 194 strikeouts and a 1.035 WHIP.
But, to land Ryan in this proposal from Rymer, the Braves, according to MLB Pipeline's rankings for 2026, would be giving up their 1st (Cam Caminiti), 2nd (JR Ritchie), and 5th (Alex Lodise) prospects.

Losing three of their top-five prospects would be a huge blow for the Braves' farm system. While they need another frontline starter, spending three of their top-five prospects would be too much.
Caminiti and Ritchie are top-100 prospects in baseball, and losing both would be a massive blow for the Braves' farm system.
Sure, landing Ryan for the rotation would be awesome. But the cost of acquiring such a star in this proposal from Rymer would be too much for the Braves to give up.
Rymer writes that "now is not the time to hoard prospects," after years of struggles with this core. While moving their prospects for MLB-ready talent isn't the worst idea, the cost of adding Ryan in this proposal would be far too much to justify making such a deal.
