For the second time in as many days, the Atlanta Braves made a trade to bolster their pitching staff.
One day after getting Bailey Falter in a trade with the Kansas City Royals, Atlanta agreed to acquire right-hander Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants, according to multiplereports Aug. 2.
Anthony Molina, a three-year veteran who is pitching for the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, is going to the Giants in return for the 31-year-old Mahle.

Mahle was on the injured list from May 29 to June 24 with a left hamstring strain. In seven starts since returning, Mahle has a respectable 3.79 ERA and 3.63 FIP.
Mahle is in his 10th MLB season. In previous stops with the Cincinnati Reds (2017-22), Minnesota Twins (2022-23), Texas Rangers (2024-25), Mahle went 39-46 with a 4.07 ERA.
The Giants (47-65) have struggled all season, and were widely projected to be among a small group of sellers leading up to the trade deadline. Teams cannot exchange players off their 40-man roster after 6 p.m. Monday.

Mahle wasn’t the best starting pitcher available, but his performance since returning from his hamstring injury suggests he can be a reliable option for the Braves.
Atlanta (67-45) has a stranglehold on the National League East. Their success has come in spite of, not because of, the health of Reynaldo Lopez, Spencer Schwellenbach and Spencer Strider.
Injuries to three-fifths of their starting rotation has left Atlanta’s rotation depth lacking much of the season. Another starter, Hurston Waldrep, is awaiting a second opinion on his own elbow injury.

Mahle joins a group of starters that, for the moment at least, includes Chris Sale, JR Ritchie, Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder and Martin Pérez.
The Braves might not be done. But the acquisition of Mahle shores up arguably their greatest area of need. Whether it’s enough to hold off the Phillies in the regular season, and stage a deep postseason run in October, remains to be ezen.
