The Atlanta Braves topped the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Sunday, July 12, wrapping up the first half of the 2026 season at 55-40 with a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. Atlanta finished 5-5 over its last 10 games.
The Braves went with a bullpen game Sunday, opening with Danny Young, who allowed one earned run in two-thirds of an inning. He was relieved by JR Ritchie after walking two batters. Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson doubled to left field, scoring Jordan Walker to give St. Louis a one-run lead.
Atlanta responded with a run in the second inning on a wild pitch by Dustin May, scoring Dominic Smith. Drake Baldwin then singled in the fourth inning, scoring the Braves’ second run and breaking the tie.
Ritchie came in and bore down, allowing just one run over 4 1/3 innings. He has now turned in three straight strong outings for Atlanta, allowing just two earned runs over 8 2/3 innings.
In the sixth inning, Brewer Hicklen doubled to center field, scoring Jim Jarvis and extending the Braves’ lead to 3-1. However, in the next half-inning, the Cardinals answered by tying the game at 3-3 after Jose Fermin singled off Didier Fuentes, scoring both Jordan Walker and Lars Nootbaar.
Dylan Dodd, Dylan Lee and Tyler Kinley also pitched in middle relief, with Dodd and Kinley each recording less than one inning.
In the ninth inning, things got weird. With two outs and two strikes, runners on first and third, and the Cardinals on the verge of a late comeback, Mauricio Dubon grounded to Masyn Winn at shortstop. Winn’s throw sailed over the head of Burleson at first base, allowing Ozzie Albies to score and giving the Braves a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth inning in his usual fashion, striking out one batter en route to another save.
Atlanta is in a good position heading into the trade deadline, but it could be in an even better spot considering how the season started. As mentioned, the Braves are 5-5 over their last 10 games but just 8-12 over their last 20, with their offensive struggles evident. While they once had the best record in baseball, they slowed down in late June and early July.
The trade deadline should be interesting for the Braves as they look to possibly add offensive help, despite being linked to Detroit Tigers starter Tarik Skubal.
