Braves' Drake Baldwin reportedly offers different return outlook than manager Walt Weiss originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves just picked up their 42nd win of the season by clinching another series, this time over the Toronto Blue Jays. They are performing well this season despite the injuries they have endured.
One of the most recent injuries was to catcher Drake Baldwin, who was swinging the bat well before landing on the injured list.
“The Atlanta Braves put Drake Baldwin on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, with an MRI revealing that the star catcher has a Grade 1 right oblique strain. Baldwin, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, was replaced by backup catcher Sandy Leon in the sixth inning of Monday's 12-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. Manager Walt Weiss said Baldwin initially felt a slight discomfort after his second at-bat but not painful enough to warrant his removal,” ESPN wrote.
Baldwin is nearing a return; it is just a matter of when for the young catcher. Braves manager Walt Weiss believes he could be back for the next homestand.
“Weiss said Baldwin could be activated during the next homestand, which runs June 16-21,” MLB.com’s Mark Bowman posted.
The Atlanta lineup has been missing Baldwin, especially since Sandy Leon and Chadwick Tromp haven’t impressed at the plate. While there is optimism from Weiss that he could return soon, it doesn’t seem like Baldwin has a definite target date.
“Drake Baldwin said he has just started doing some baseball activities. Still hasn’t been cleared for dry swings. While he’s hopeful to return as soon as possible, he said he’s not aiming for a specific date,” Bowman wrote.
The Braves know that when Baldwin returns, he will likely resume catching duties regularly, especially with Murphy also dealing with injuries. Baldwin knows this as well, so he may be taking a cautious approach.
It is somewhat surprising that Weiss mentioned a potential return date while Baldwin did not echo the same timeline. Baldwin may simply know his recovery is further along than expected. The Braves will need to be careful not to rush his return too soon.
