One of the NFL’s strangest sagas continues with no clear indication of how it will end. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has kept his social media drama going, and this time he claims his soon-to-be former head coach, Kyle Shanahan, wants him to return to the team.
Although general manager John Lynch has closed the door on a reunion, Aiyuk suggested otherwise. In a post on his Instagram Story, he once again went on a tirade.

“Coach want me to come back so I can draw all the coverage and make it easy for the guys for the guys that remind him of himself from back in his heyday,” Aiyuk wrote.

“People have career years when 11 on the O! Everybody eat NO KIZZY!!! I hold a NFL RECORD for making plays w the least amount of opportunities!!! Im looking for MY opp cuz I’m gone capitalize and win a bowl! I’m not gone fumble it away!! I’m done playing backseat to folks who NOT like that!!! #TRUESTORY #FREEYUKE.”
It’s safe to say Lynch and Aiyuk are not on the same page. There is no chance Aiyuk will ever wear a 49ers uniform again, at least on the field.

Aiyuk has repeatedly stated that he fully intends to play for the Washington Commanders. At this point, it appears to be more a matter of when he will be released than if. However, there is no guarantee the 49ers will release him anytime soon.

The 49ers still hold his rights and appear willing to play the long game, or wait until another team makes an offer. At this point, a conditional seventh-round pick might be enough to get a deal done.
After everything that has unfolded, though, it’s fair to wonder who would be eager to acquire him. Even a wide receiver-needy team like the Miami Dolphins probably isn’t giving the idea much thought.
It has been a wild ride ever since the aftermath of Super Bowl LVIII. The saga nearly ended with the 49ers trading Aiyuk to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Shanahan reportedly stopped the deal at the last second.
