SUNRISE — Game 3 started in the worst possible way for the Panthers. But it ended in the best way.

Twenty-three seconds into the game, Matthew Knies put the Maple Leafs on the board with a quick goal. It was a gut punch, but not a knockout blow.

The Panthers came back from an early two-goal deficit, and Brad Marchand scored the game-winning goal in overtime to beat the Maple Leafs 5-4 at Amerant Bank Arena. Florida clawed its way back into the series with its first win after Toronto started the series with back-to-back victories.

Veteran forward John Tavares put Florida in a deep hole nearly six minutes into the first period, wrapping around the Panthers’ net and putting a second goal past Sergei Bobrovsky.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov made sure the Panthers would not go down without a fight. Although he was stumbling toward the net, he managed to get a shot off the end of his stick, and Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly accidentally tipped it past goalie Joseph Woll.

Although the Panthers looked dangerous for much of the second half of the first period, it was the Maple Leafs who struck next. With A.J. Greer in the penalty box for interference, a shot from Tavares ricocheted off Gustav Forsling and past Bobrovsky 2:52 into the second period.

Down but not out, Florida eliminated the two-goal deficit quickly. Forward Sam Reinhart deflected a pass behind Woll. Despite Woll and defenseman Brandon Carlo’s best efforts, the puck crossed the line. After initially being ruled a save, the goal was counted after a review.

Just over a minute later, Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe teamed for a two-on-one. Bennett pulled Woll to the right side of the net and dished it off to Verhaeghe, who buried the puck in the wide-open net to tie the game.

Jonah Gadjovich, a fourth-liner playing his first playoff game this season, put the Panthers ahead for the first time in the game with a wrist shot with 4:53 left in the second period.

Florida held the lead for about 15 minutes of game time until Rielly, who deflected Barkov’s goal into the net, had his own shot deflected by Panthers defenseman Seth Jones. The deflected shot got past Bobrovsky, tying the game at four with 9:04 left in the third period.
