The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Mets 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to win their eighth straight game and clinch their third consecutive series win. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, after the win, the Red Sox have designated left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe for assignment.

The 36-year-old veteran signed a one-year, $1-million deal with the Red Sox in March, adding much-needed left-handed pitching depth to the bullpen. However, Coulombe struggled mightily during his time in Boston, allowing 11 earned runs on 18 hits in 22 innings across 29 appearances, good for a 4.50 ERA. He walked 15 and struck out only 10.

While Coulombe’s numbers suggest a struggling reliever, his advanced metrics show he benefited from some good fortune, posting a 4.97 fielding-independent pitching (FIP) and an expected FIP of 6.19.

The decision to part ways with Coulombe could have been due in part to financial reasons, as, according to Cotillo, Coulombe was scheduled to activate bonuses under his contract beginning with 30 appearances.

Ahead of Saturday’s win, the Red Sox announced that right-handed pitcher Jack Anderson was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. The 32-year-old was designated for assignment on Monday afternoon to make room on the 40-man roster for Patrick Sandoval. Anderson made his major league debut with the Red Sox in April, allowing three earned runs on eight hits across three relief appearances. In 58 innings with Triple-A Worcester, the 32-year-old right-hander posted a 4.81 ERA.

The first day of the 2026 MLB Draft wrapped up in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. The Red Sox made three picks in the first four rounds, selecting a pair of teammates from the University of North Carolina, Jake Schaffner (No. 20) and Owen Hull (No. 67), as well as Auburn-commit shortstop Jace Mataczynski from Hudson, Wisc. The Red Sox will have 15 picks in rounds 5-20, which begin at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Boston will be well represented in Sunday afternoon’s futures game with the top two prospects in the organization, shortstop Franklin Arias and pitcher Anthony Eyanson, playing in the annual prospect showcase. The Future’s Game can be seen on NBC/Peacock beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET.

The Red Sox will look to make it a sweep of the Mets and an undefeated nine-game road trip on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the unofficial first half. Payton Tolle (5-6, 3.14 ERA) will get the start for Boston while New York has yet to name its starter. First pitch from Citi Field set for 1:40 p.m. ET.
