BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox kept on rolling on Sunday afternoon, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1 to win their 13th consecutive game. With the win, the Red Sox not only continued their unbelievable turnaround but also sent a message to the rest of the American League that they are to be taken seriously.
Tampa Bay entered the four-game series at Fenway Park with the best record in the American League at 52-38. The Red Sox, however, made light work of the class of the AL, outscoring them 28-10 en route to the four-game sweep. The Rays are joined atop the American League standings by the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox, both of whom were also victims of the Red Sox' torrid stretch. Overall, Boston is 11-0 against the three best teams in the American League over their last 24 days, showing that they can not only run with the best teams in the league, but also dominate them.
What was most impressive about the Red Sox series against the Rays, and a theme of their now 19-2 stretch, was that they were unwilling to admit defeat. In game two of Friday's day-night doubleheader, Tampa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the Boston offense immediately responded with three of their own to take a 3-2 lead. Again in the third inning, the Rays rallied to tie the game at three, and the Red Sox offense reclaimed the lead just four batters later.

That never-say-die attitude came up big again in the Red Sox' miraculous 7-6 win on Saturday. After mustering just three hits and six baserunners through six innings en route to a 6-3 deficit, the Red Sox stormed back for four seventh-inning runs, rallying for their 12th straight win.
On Sunday afternoon, the Rays again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, but once again, the Red Sox refused to settle, immediately answering with a run in the bottom half of the inning, before adding three more in the bottom of the third to claim a 4-1 lead, which they would not relinquish.
As utility man Anthony Seigler said after last Sunday’s 3-2 win over the New York Mets, “You can never count us out.”
With the win on Sunday, the Red Sox extended their winning streak to 13 straight games, tying the 1948 Red Sox for the second-longest in franchise history. They also become just the sixth team in the 125-year history of the team to go 18-2 over a 20-game period, joining the 2004, 1995, 1988, 1950, and 1948 teams.

The Red Sox are, of course, chasing the ultimate goal: becoming the first team since the 1914 Boston Braves to make the postseason after being 14 or more games under .500 on June 24 or later.
Boston will look to make it 14 in a row and inch closer to the franchise record of 15 straight wins on Monday night when they welcome the Baltimore Orioles to Fenway Park to kick off a three-game set. Payton Tolle (5-6, 3.11 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite Shane Baz (4-9, 4.19 ERA) for the Orioles. First pitch set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
