BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox came out of the gates hot in the unofficial second half, extending their season-long nine-game winning streak to 10 thanks to a 10-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Fenway Park. It was rookie left-hander Jake Bennett who got the start for Boston, and he continued the dominant start to his major league career.
The 25-year-old has been a revelation for Boston since rejoining the Boston rotation on June 10 in place of the demoted Brayan Bello. In seven starts since being recalled, Bennett has allowed just nine earned runs on 27 hits across 43.1 innings pitched, good for a 1.87 ERA. What has been most impressive about Bennett's dominant stretch is the command of the strike zone, as the 25-year-old has walked only five batters while striking out 34.

It was more of the same for Bennett on Friday afternoon as the Red Sox dominated Tampa to take the first game of the doubleheader, as the former Nationals farmhand tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking one. With the outing, Bennett accomplished several feats that have been seen only a few times in the 125-year history of the Boston Red Sox. He joined Chris Sale, Pedro Martinez, and Roger Clemens as the only four Red Sox pitchers since 1920 to have a six-game stretch with an ERA of 1.20 or lower and fewer than five walks allowed.
Bennett also became the fifth Red Sox starter to have five consecutive starts of six or more innings allowing two or fewer runs within their first nine career starts, joining Dave Morehead, Don Schwall, Dave Ferriss, and Ernie Shore.

The Boston pitching staff has dominated over the course of its 10-game winning streak, allowing only 14 runs during the stretch, marking the fewest runs the team has ever allowed over a 10-game stretch in the live-ball era, which dates back to 1920.
The Red Sox pitching staff entered play on Friday with an fWAR of 12.4 through their first 94 games, the sixth-highest mark in baseball. The Boston staff is on pace for 21.4 fWAR over the course of a 162-game season, which would be the team's best mark since 2017 and the fifth-highest mark since 1975.
After the win in game one of Friday's doubleheader, the Red Sox are 47-48 and tied with the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins for the final wild card spot in the American League.
