One of the cooler stories from this World Cup had been how the city of Boston was essentially overtaken by Scotland fans. And Boston loved every bit of it.

With Scotland playing two group matches at Gillette Stadium (Boston Stadium) in its first World Cup appearance since 1998, the Tartan Army supporters group chose Boston has its base for a two-week party. Bars were running out of beer. Chants and songs were a constant in the streets and public transport. The Red Sox hosted a special Scotland jersey giveaway at Fenway, which led to an epic atmosphere.

But with Scotland and its fans moving on to Miami for Wednesday's Brazil match, the Boston Globe gave the city's new friends a proper farewell.

The full-page ad read:

Thank you for the laughter, the bagpipes, and the memories. The World Cup will move on. So will the songs, but we’ll never forget the joy you brought to our city.

That's what the World Cup is all about.

As we head for Miami, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to the city & people of Boston.

You’ve made us feel more than welcome in the time we’ve spent with you; you’ve made us feel part of your incredible city.

Thank you for your generosity and your wonderful hospitality.

When does Scotland play next?

Scotland will face powerhouse Brazil in Wednesday's final Group C match at Hard Rock Stadium at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

The group standings can still change in the final day, but there is an outside chance that Scotland returns to Boston on June 29 as an advancing third-place team against Germany. That would be the perfect reunion.
