Over 30,000 runners and even more spectators are set to descend on Massachusetts on April 20, 2026, for the Boston Marathon.
It will be the 130th annual race with entrants from all 50 states in the country predicted to participate, the Boston Athletic Association said.
The marathon, which is run on Patriots' Day, goes through eight Massachusetts communities, starting in Hopkinton, threading through Framingham and Wellesley, and ending in Boston.
For that to happen safely and efficiently, a number of road closures are required.
Here are the times each Bay State community will have roads closed during this year's Boston Marathon.
The Boston Athletic Association provided this chart for the marathon course road closures looking generally at timing.
"Streets and roadways which comprise and abut the Boston Marathon route will be closed to vehicular traffic on race day," the B.A.A. website said.
The Town of Hopkinton said that Main Street, Ash Street, Park Street, and Hayden Rowe will be closed at 6:30 a.m., as they surround the starting line and the town common area. Other roads that lead into downtown Hopkinton will be closed at 7 a.m.
The following locations will be blocked off for the marathon.
"In addition to these locations, all roadways that are adjacent to the roads where runners, spectators, volunteers, and workers are located will be blocked," the Town of Hopkinton said.
The association said that drivers cannot park their vehicles near the Boston finish line because of the closed roads and concerns over traffic congestion.
There are multiple streets in Boston where parking will not be allowed during the marathon or during the leadup to the marathon. You can find more information about places you cannot park on the City of Boston website.
The athletic association suggested the 100 Clarendon garage, the parking garage at 100 Huntington Ave. in Boston, the Copley Place parking garage at 2 Copley Place, or the Boston Common Garage on Charles Street (although this one is closed the morning of the marathon).
