On Friday night, the BC men’s hockey team started one of its most important series of the season against the UConn Huskies. Both squads are sitting on the NCAA tournament bubble and are looking to boost their NPI ranking ahead of the postseason in March. It was Boston College that struck first at Conte Forum, defeating UConn 5-2 in the first game of a home-and-home.

The first period belonged to James Hagens. After much of it went by without a score on a few powerplay opportunities by both teams, Hagens finally converted on BC’s 3rd powerplay of the game after coming out of the penalty box himself. He then quickly made it a 2-0 game when Aram Minnetian found him up near the blue line and he fired a rocket into the net.

The Huskies made things interesting in the second period. Ryan Tattle scored on Louka Cloutier just 30 seconds into the second period, and Kaden Shahan’s equalizer followed not too long after that. The early lead that BC built evaporated in just a few minutes due to a slow start coming out of intermission. And the UConn atta k did not let up, while BC’s defense seemed to be holding on for dear life for the majority of the period. The Eagles finally got some relief when UConn’s Samake was called for roughing, which allowed James Hagens to complete his hat trick with another powerplay goal to give BC back a 3-2 lead before the end of the period.

The third period was more of a defensive slugfest without either team getting much of anything going to start. But eventually Landan Resendes got a puck through right in front of the net with 8:30 remaining in regulation, giving BC a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish. Teddy Stiga scored the empty netter to make it 5-2, and Boston College won a crucial matchup against UConn.

These teams play again on Saturday afternoon at 3PM in Hartford.
