The Boston Celtics got their preseason schedule for the 2026-27 season on Monday, and it comes with a nice gift:
The Celtics will play host to Jaylen Brown and the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET at TD Garden. It will mark Brown's first return to Boston since being traded in early July. Of course, Brown will return to Boston multiple times in the regular season, but anything that spices up the preseason is ultimately a good thing for Boston - and it's fans.
Furthermore, the game being on a Saturday night is a good thing from an attendance purpose. It also comes on the eve of a New England Patriots home game against the Las Vegas Raiders, making it a very good sports weekend in New England. And if the Boston Red Sox continue to win, they could be playing in the MLB Playoffs at that time as well.
The Celtics will play four preseason games, with two coming at home and two coming on the road. They'll open up the preseason slate on Oct. 8 at the Cleveland Cavaliers before hosting Philadelphia on the 10th. They'll then host Charlotte on the 14th before traveling to Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 17. That will end the preseason and the C's will embark on the new campaign.
While it won't be as impactful as Brown's return to Boston, it will also be interesting to see Paul George return to Philadelphia in that game on the 16th.
As was the same case in Summer League, preseason will an important barometer for rookies Chris Cenac Jr. and Dillon Mitchell. The two Celtics' draft picks are fighting to be on the NBA roster as opposed to the G-League, and preseason will be four more chances to prove that they belong.
But beyond the rookies, it will be good to get a first look at George and Mitchell Robinson in Boston uniforms. Robinson should help the C's get more balanced offensively, and with his offensive rebounding ability, he should help create more shots near the basket.
Speaking this weekend, Team USA Basketball architect Grant Hill spoke about the controversy from 2024 in which Brown was left off the Olympic team. Brown thinks it's because he had been critical of Nike in the past, but Hill gave his side of the story, saying that had nothing to do with it.
