The Philadelphia Flyers were pinned to be sellers at the 2026 NHL trade deadline, but their first move of the day wasn't what people were expecting.

On Friday, the Flyers dealt forward Bobby Brink to the Minnesota Wild in a one-for-one swap of young players. It's quite an intriguing and fun deal, as the trade makes sense for both sides once you dig into the details. While the Flyers are amidst a losing season and aren't likely to make a postseason push, the Wild are looking to keep their playoff position in the West.

Wild and Flyers trade details

Minnesota Wild get: F Bobby Brink

Philadelphia Flyers get: D David Jiricek

Wild trade grade

Brink adds immediate depth to the Wild's middle-six as Minnesota looks to keep control of a playoff spot in the Central. At 24 years old, Brink likely hasn't hit his ceiling yet and could even become a second-line winger for the Wild if things break right.

This season, Brink has 13 goals and 26 points in an average of 15:29 minutes a night. In the short term, the Wild get a solid player with playmaking ability that should help them in a playoff push. Though not a star-caliber talent by any means, Brink likely sits between a 40 and 50 point player and is a really great get for Minnesota here at this deadline for such a low cost.

Jiricek is certainly more raw as a prospect than Brink is. With 84 games of NHL experience, Jiricek is still finding his footing after being drafted No. 6 overall in the 2022 draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. It is a bit concerning to see Jiricek move to his third team in five years after being such a high draft pick. Still, this feels like a reclamation project move for general manager Danny Briere and the Flyers, as Jiricek better fills a position of need (right-shot defenseman) for Philadelphia than Brink, who was in a log-jam of wingers in the organization.

Brink is the better player as of now, but the upside is there for Jiricek if he can improve his skating and awareness on the ice. And at just 22 years old, Jiricek still has room to grow his game if the Flyers give him the chance to.
