The possibility that LeBron James will sign as a free agent with the Philadelphia 76ers has picked up steam over the last handful of days. It seemed to become a particularly realistic possibility once the 76ers agreed to send Paul George and draft capital to the Boston Celtics for five-time All-Star wing Jaylen Brown.
The sentiment around the NBA is that the 76ers are now legitimate championship contenders, or at least close to that level. If James were to join them, perhaps some would consider the team the favorite to reach the NBA Finals, even over the reigning world champion New York Knicks.
Bob Myers was one of the main architects of the Golden State Warriors' dynasty when he served as their general manager from 2012 to 2023. While on the "Game Over" podcast, which is co-hosted by Max Kellerman and James' longtime agent Rich Paul, Myers gave a simple pitch to James as to why the future Hall of Famer should head to the City of Brotherly Love.
From a purely straightforward standpoint, the 76ers do represent James' best shot at winning his fifth NBA title. However, as Myers alluded to, if he were to choose the Sixers, he would likely face a huge backlash because the team already has a stacked roster, much as he did when he joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat in 2010.
James would also have to play a greatly diminished offensive role in Philly, even more so than he did with the Los Angeles Lakers this past season when he was their third scoring option.
During another episode of "Game Over," Paul said James told him that "complete happiness" is the objective. It is anyone's guess what exactly that would entail, especially given his options.
The Warriors, Myers' former team, as well as the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and, of course, the Cleveland Cavaliers are all considered suitors for James along with the Sixers.

“If he was here I’d say, ‘I honestly believe this is your best chance to win. You have to decide all the other things that are equally important.’ It’s his life, right? He has to play. He has to face the scrutiny of his decision. Half the people will say, ‘You should’ve done this’ or ‘You should’ve done that’ and criticize him for whatever. It’s his life; he’s been through all that.
“What I would just say is, ‘If it’s about winning, let’s talk about this team, because you can win here in Philadelphia.’”
