CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers feature one of the more talented rosters in the league led by star players Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. When the three of them are able to play and get in a rhythm, the Sixers are a completely different team and can make things happen.

However, the team was swept in Round 2 by the New York Knicks and it exposed some warts on the roster. One of them is the lack of bench production. In today's NBA, with the way the CBA is set up, it's important to have depth and find ways to build a productive roster around the team's star players.

After the Sixers were swept by a much deeper Knicks team, it begs the question, can teams win with the Big 3 model in today's NBA?

"Well, we didn't get it done this year with three guys, but that doesn't mean it can't be done," said Bob Myers, who is currently the team's leader of the basketball operations department in the interim. "I think it's a smart question in that, what's the modern roster supposed to look like with the second apron, really, which oftentimes operates as kind of a hard cap. The truth is, depth may be more important than it's ever been."

Depth is certainly important in today's league. There isn't an exact science to it, but when one looks at the teams that are left playing in the playoffs, the focus there is on the entire roster rather than a star or two at the top of the roster. Of course, the San Antonio Spurs have Victor Wembanyama, the Oklahoma City Thunder have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Knicks have Jalen Brunson, the Detroit Pistons have Cade Cunningham, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have Donovan Mitchell, but all those teams have a strong roster around the star on the roster.

"Maybe it’s the pace of play," Myers added. "Maybe that's what we require of our players more. Not to say that this model doesn't work, but we have to look at what happened this year and be honest about it, and see if—we got to be honest about can this model work right? And that's really the question. I also, understanding that depth is key, and you only have certain amount of resources to spend, so that's something that's all part of the questions. It's all part of what we need to figure out going forward."

The Sixers will have some questions to answer this offseason. They have a lot of money committed to Embiid, George, and Maxey, but Philadelphia will have to find ways to win around the margins and build its depth to go deeper into the playoffs.
