The Toronto Blue Jays have been questioned for some of their decisions over the past few years, though many of them seem to have been the right ones in hindsight.
After moving on from Bo Bichette, many fans didn't agree with the decision. Instead, the Blue Jays have been proven right, as he's struggled a ton with the New York Mets.
Another player the Blue Jays allowed to walk was Matt Chapman. Chapman, at the time, was one of the better third basemen in baseball and one of the better players in the American League as a whole.
Fast forward a few years, and Chapman has been about average, and reports now indicate that the San Francisco Giants are looking to move on from him as well.
“Another possible candidate to move is third baseman Matt Chapman, who is in the second year of a six-year, $151 million contract that includes a full no-trade clause. Chapman, 33, has recovered from an early slump to lead the team with 3.2 bWAR. Trading him would create payroll flexibility and open third base for Casey Schmitt,” Ken Rosenthal wrote.
It's always tough to move on from players and look at what they do in the future as the reason why teams decide to do what they do.
The Blue Jays didn't let Chapman walk because they thought he would be a bad player, but there were financial considerations involved. He hasn't been bad by any means, but he still isn't worth the type of money he's being paid, and once again, the Blue Jays look very smart for doing so.
