The Toronto Blue Jays have made their move to strengthen the starting rotation. Toronto is acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The return heading to Los Angeles was not immediately reported.
Soriano gives the Blue Jays a proven starter in the middle of an impressive season. The 27-year-old has made 22 starts for the Angels in 2026, going 9-6 with a 3.29 ERA across 123 innings.
He has also recorded 127 strikeouts while posting a 1.25 WHIP.
Jose Soriano gives Blue Jays another dependable starter
Soriano’s arrival gives Toronto another pitcher capable of handling a significant workload during the final two months of the regular season.
The right-hander has allowed 97 hits and 45 earned runs this year. Although his 57 walks are worth monitoring, Soriano has consistently limited damage and kept the Angels competitive despite their struggles in the standings.
He was especially effective in his final two starts before the trade.
Soriano pitched seven innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 20, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven. He followed that performance with five scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants on July 26.
In those two outings, Soriano surrendered only seven hits and two earned runs across 12 innings.
That recent form should make him an immediate option for Toronto’s rotation. Soriano also brings swing-and-miss ability, recording at least seven strikeouts in eight starts this season.

Angels turn toward future at MLB trade deadline
The deal represents a clear long-term move for an Angels team that entered August at 43-69 and last in the American League West.
Soriano had been one of the team’s most dependable starters, but his value and multiple seasons of club control made him an appealing trade candidate. The Angels now have an opportunity to add more young talent as they continue reshaping their roster.
Soriano spent parts of four seasons with Los Angeles, making the transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation. He leaves the organization with a 3.72 career ERA, 432 strikeouts and 203 walks in 447 innings.
Toronto, meanwhile, is betting that Soriano can carry his strong season into a postseason chase.
The Blue Jays did not simply add rotation depth. They acquired a pitcher producing one of the best seasons of his career, with enough experience to take on meaningful innings immediately.
More details about the players heading to Los Angeles should provide a clearer picture of the trade’s long-term impact. For Toronto, however, the immediate objective is obvious: Soriano is being brought in to help the Blue Jays win now.
