Blue Jays' Patrick Corbin silences 1,000-hit celebration by Orioles' Pete Alonso originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Patrick Corbin didn't allow long-time nemesis Pete Alonso another opportunity to celebrate.
For a change.
Corbin, who allowed Alonso to generate 19 hits, including five home runs, during their opening 52 MLB encounters, retired the former five-time All-Star both times he faced him Thursday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
One game after Alonso earned career hit No. 1,000, Corbin broke personal precedent by keeping him waiting for 1,001, but just for a few more innings.
With runners on first and second base and one out in the first inning, the Orioles had an opportunity to jump out ot an early advantage, but Corbin rallied to strike out Alonso. The Blue Jays' pitcher battled back from a 2-0 count to put him away three pitches later, capped by a 92-mph sinker.
Leading off the fourth inning, Alonso lifted Corbin's first offering into a fly to center field. Orioles infielder Cody Mayo followed with a home run to center, tying the score at 1-1.
The Blue Jays scored what proved to be the winning run on a bases-loaded ABS Challenge System challenge call. Adley Rutschman earned the bases-loaded walk, securing a 2-1 victory in the first matchup this season between the AL East rivals.
Orioles' Pete Alonso adjusting to new environment
Alonso's hit No. 1,000 came a bit later in the season than he expected.
In his first season with the Orioles, Alonso, who played seven seasons with the New York Mets, continues adapting to his new environment.
After agreeing to a five-year, $155 million contract last offseason, Alonso's bat was added to fill a power void. It didn't quite start as planned, however. Through April, his batting average fell to .198, with four homers. He began fulfilling his role better in May, batting .271 with six homers.
With his 1,000-hit milestone achieved, Alonso only had to wait until he faced relief pitcher Tyler Rogers in the eighth inning to beat out an infield single for his 1,001st safety.
