The Toronto Blue Jays are dealing with a ton of injuries to begin the 2026 season, with the starting rotation currently down Cody Ponce and Max Scherzer, along with four other quality starters for some time this season.
But that's not all. Alejandro Kirk is also going to miss a lot of time this season, as he landed on the injured list with a thumb injury.
According to Keegam Matheson of MLB.com, Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced that Kirk's recovery timeline could be six weeks, which means Toronto is going to be down their starting catcher until late May at the earliest.

"Alejandro Kirk had a screw placed in his thumb," Matheson reports. John Schneider said, "The timeline is looking like six weeks."
With Kirk set to miss a lot of time this season, the Blue Jays will have to rely on Tyler Heineman and Brandon Valenzuela in the meantime.
Kirk was hitting .150 with one home run and two RBIs before this injury, but his absence will mean a lot more than his offense.
Heineman has a .385 batting average in 13 at-bats, but he's cost the Blue Jays with his poor defense this season already.

Valenzuela, the 25-year-old rookie catcher who's been with the San Diego Padres previously in his career, has a .250 batting average in four at-bats so far this season.
The offense and defense at the plate are going to take a bit of dip thanks to Kirk's absence, which is set to last roughly six weeks, according to this report from Schenider.
If Kirk returns six weeks from the day of this announcement, he would be back on May 19th. This is going to be something to follow along with closely as April progresses, as there might be more insight later this month into how Kirk's recovery is going.
But, for now, Kirk is set to miss the next six weeks or so, with his backups in Heineman and Valenzuela to take the starts behind the plate while the beloved star misses some time.
