Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is supposed to be the best first baseman in the Majors.
Guerrero's $500 million contract indicates that he is. But that's not what the numbers on his Baseball Reference and Savant pages say.
The Toronto Blue Jays slugger was voted as the All-Star Game starter at first base in the American League. But did he deserve to? Probably not.
Both Nick Kurtz of the Athletics and Ben Rice of the New York Yankees are having much better seasons.
"According to Baseball Reference, the Blue Jays are 28th out of 30 teams in baseball in OPS by their first basemen … 30th in home runs … 24th in WAR … and 28th in Batting Runs Above Average. Let’s just say that’s not Charles McAdoo’s fault," wrote The Athletic's Jayson Stark.
All six of Guerrero's home runs this season have come on the road. He has not hit a homer in 190 plate apperances this season at the Rogers Centre.
"That’s not just shocking. It’s crushing a Blue Jays team with World Series dreams and an offense that desperately needs more Vlad magic," Stark added.
"They were 17-4 when he went deep at home last year, counting the postseason. They were 7-1 when he homered anywhere in October."

The Blue Jays obviously need more from Guerrero.
He is the leader of the club, and when he goes, their offense thrives along with him.
But the results at the plate as the All-Star break nears are concerning to say the least.
