Blue Jays 1.40 ERA starter deemed 'untouchable' in trade talks for obvious reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Toronto Blue Jays are having a rough 2026 season, as they've been plagued by a ton of injuries and poor play, leading to a 21-28 record that has them 11.5 games back of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

After making the World Series last year, the Blue Jays might now be heading towards the MLB trade deadline as sellers. If they are sellers, the Blue Jays have a ton of intriguing trade chips they could sell at the deadline for some big returns.

However, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report identified one player that the Blue Jays should deem "untouchable," and it's 1.40 ERA starter, Trey Yesavage.

"After posting a 3.58 ERA in 27.2 innings last postseason while shining on the sport's biggest stage, he has picked up right where he left off after missing time early with a shoulder impingement," Rueter writes.

Reuter is naming Yesavage as the Blue Jays "untouchable" trade chip this year, and it's for an incredibly obvious reason: he's going to be the future ace of this team.

Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage is untouchable as future ace of Toronto's rotation

Kevin Gausman is the current ace of the Blue Jays' pitching staff, but he will be a free agent after the 2026 season, so the Blue Jays will need a new leader.

Dylan Cease seems to be the next ace of the rotation, especially with his strong 2.98 ERA mark so far this season. But, Yesavage has all the makings of an ace, is significantly cheaper, and a lot younger.

Yesavage is just 22 years old, has a 1.40 ERA in four starts this season after posting a 3.21 ERA in three regular-season starts in 2025, and a 3.58 ERA in six outings in the playoffs last year.

He's under club control through the 2031 season, meaning the Blue Jays have the next six seasons of Yesavage under control at a very low price.

Trading someone like that would be a massive mistake, so it's fairly obvious why this 1.40 ERA starter is the Blue Jays' most "untouchable" trade chip this year.

There might not be a single player the Blue Jays should trade Yesavage for, as his control, price, and talent make him such an obvious player to keep around for a while longer.
